NLP – (Neuro-Linguistic Programming) Despite its rather unfortunate name, NLP is an exceptionally powerful method of making change, often enjoyably! NLP looks at the way we represent our experience of the world through our neurology, how we communicate (linguistic) with ourselves and other people, and how we can change (programming) our habitual ways of thinking, communicating and behaving. So NLP is essentially the process by which we learn about how we think, behave, and communicate in order to be able to begin to learn to do those things more usefully and resourcefully.
All of us make internal images, talk to ourselves, have internal feelings: NLP enables you to explore these internal senses to discover how they are constructed in terms of the behaviours you want to change. It is the way we represent the world to ourselves, internally, that greatly determines how we feel and what we do. NLP offers ways not of changing the world but changing your relationship to it, giving choice in situations where previously it felt like there wasn’t a choice – it often then seems as though the world has changed!
Once we understand better how we think, we thereby give ourselves the opportunity of change. If our feelings and behaviours are greatly determined by our thoughts, it follows that once we know how we are using our brain (neurology) we can also use it to change. This doesn’t suggest we repress or ignore how we feel – it means we can learn to see and relate differently to things happening in our lives, thereby allowing greater insight into the situations we find ourselves in. This in turn helps you, for example, to see solutions you wouldn’t have thought of; giving you more of….. The life you choose. |
